Our treasured Patriarch, Richard Francis Mogan III, peacefully passed away at home in Indian Wells in the loving arms of his beloved Sally and adoring family into the arms of God September 9, at the age of 97. Rick, as known by all of his friends was a “one of a kind” gentleman: A gentleman of impeccable character, a gentle spirit, winsome, fun, generous and oh so very kind. Rick’s life was the epitome of a life well lived in every way possible. An inspirational father, devoted husband, and cherished friend… so deeply loved and respected…now, then and always.

Rick’s family immigrated from Ireland to the United States in 1850. He was the grandson of San Francisco attorney Richard F Mogan and Great Grandson of Judge Joseph R Mogan of San Francisco. Rick’s parents, Dr. Richard F Mogan II and Marie Scheller Mogan relocated from San Francisco to Los Angeles where Rick was born. Although Rick carved out a wonderful life in Los Angeles, Jackson Hole and Indian Wells, he was always so proud of his family’s heritage and held a deep affection for San Francisco.

Rick, affectionately known as “Hi” to his family, led by example. His deeply seated work ethic, patriotism, entrepreneurial spirit and kind treatment of all people was the foundation of his success. While serving his country in World War II as a Lieutenant in the Navy, Rick attended several universities and was proud to have finished his education at USC. He was a Trojan fan to the end and did his best to watch every game! Rick admired hard work and was dedicated to finding his “niche” which he did. Real estate development became his professional passion. Along with his lifelong friend and business partner, Denny Dickenson, Rick developed mobile home parks and storage facilities throughout the state of California. Rick then went on to build Brea Corporate Park, a commercial office complex which began in 1986 and continued for 35 years. As giving, contributing and participating were always in the forefront of his character, he was active in numerous clubs, organizations, community development and charitable foundations throughout his life. He always believed in giving back.

Rick loved life. He loved traveling, art and playing bridge. He loved the outdoors; sailing, skiing, tennis and golf were all activities he enjoyed, yet fishing was the highest on his list. It was in his soul. His love for the outdoors began when he was a little boy where he would fish with his father and friends. This spawned into a life of fly fishing from Alaska, British Columbia and to Jackson, Wyoming where he and Sally created another welcoming home together and allowed Rick to joyously share his passion for fly fishing with all the children and grandchildren. In later years, he loved being at Eldorado, again sharing all that he treasured with family and friends. Rick’s sense of humor was a testament to his sharp wit and his emotional generosity knew no bounds, as he always made everyone he knew or met feel special and valued. His sincerity was truly genuine and from the heart. Everyone, young and old loved being around Rick, our Hi Guy. This extraordinary, lovely, man will be missed more than words could ever express, forever in our hearts and an enduring legacy in all of our lives.

Rick was preceded in death by his first wife Diane Cameron, and his sister Marilyn Mogan King. Rick is survived by his devoted and loving wife Sally of 30 years, his two children, Richard F Mogan IV and Markley Ann Mogan, Sally’s two children Mark Tuttle and Kathryn H Huff along with eight wonderful grandchildren.

Fare you well, Fare you well, we all love you more than words can tell. Listen to the river sing sweet songs. To rock my soul.

In honor of Rick’s life, the family kindly suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations to be made in his memory to Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California

A private family memorial is being planned
