Hall of Famer Hard dies at 85

Darlene Hard, an aggressive serve-and-volley player who won three major singles titles and 18 major doubles titles in a Hall of Fame tennis career, died at Northridge Hospital after a brief illness. She was 85.

Hard played at Pomona College, competing in the first intercolle­giate championsh­ip in 1958 and winning the national title. Hard was ranked in the U.S. top 10 every year between 1954 and 1963, four times as No. 1. Hard appeared in seven major championsh­ip singles finals, winning titles at the 1960 French Championsh­ips and the 1960 and ’61 U.S. Championsh­ips. She had even greater success in doubles. She won three French titles, four Wimbledon titles and six U.S. championsh­ips.

She became a member of the Internatio­nal Tennis Hall of Fame in 1973.

The Portland Trail Blazers fired Neil Olshey, the team’s president of basketball operations and general manager, for violating their code of conduct. The team hired an outside firm last month to investigat­e allegation­s of misconduct. The team promoted director of player personnel Joe Cronin to interim GM . ... Milwaukee signed swingman Wesley Matthews, who spent last year with the Lakers.

Bryson DeChambeau shot an eight-under 64 for a one-shot lead at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. Collin Morikawa, Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau are tied for second . ... The U.S. Golf Assn. is providing a national championsh­ip for players with disabiliti­es starting next year.

New York Giants quarterbac­k Daniel Jones will not play Sunday because of a neck injury . ... Chicago quarterbac­k Andy Dalton will make his second straight start Sunday because of Justin Fields’ broken ribs . ... Kansas City will be without cornerback Rashad Fenton (knee) and right tackle Lucas Niang (rib) Sunday.

The Chargers will get a boost Sunday with the return of left guard Matt Feiler, who missed last week’s game in Denver. Defensive tackle Linval Joseph (COVID list) will miss his third game in a row, and cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. (concussion) also won’t play.
