Djokovic visa appeal moves to higher court

Evert reveals ovarian cancer

- Staff and wire reports

Novak Djokovic was reported to be back in immigration detention Saturday after his legal challenge to avoid being deported from Australia for being unvaccinated for COVID-19 was moved to a higher court.

Judge David O’Callaghan ruled that lawyers representing Djokovic and the government would need to submit written arguments later Saturday and scheduled a further hearing for Sunday morning.

Immigration Minister Alex Hawke blocked Djokovic’s visa, which originally was revoked when he arrived last week. But it was restored Monday by a judge on procedural grounds.

Everyone at the Australian Open is required to be vaccinated. Djokovic had sought a medical exemption on the grounds that he says he tested positive in December. He has a record nine Australian Open titles, including the last three.

Former tennis star Chris Evert said she was diagnosed with an early stage of ovarian cancer.

She learned of the cancer last month and began chemotherapy this week.

“I have some challenges ahead of me,” Evert wrote on ESPN.com. “But I have comfort in knowing the chemotherapy is to ensure that cancer does not come back.”

LAFC landed its second MLS All-Star midfielder in less than a week, acquiring Kellyn Acosta from Colorado for as much as $1.5 million in allocation money. Acosta, 26, is a veteran of nine seasons and made the All-Star team in 2017. He also has 45 caps with the national team, playing in seven of the eight U.S. World Cup qualifiers last year. He joins former Kansas City standout Ilie Sánchez, who signed a twoyear deal with LAFC.
