Rams star Aaron Donald tackles a sale of his estate in Calabasas

- BY JACK FLEMMING

After weighing retirement in the offseason, Rams star Aaron Donald and his wife, Erica, are shopping around their custom Calabasas estate for $6.25 million.

The listing arrives two months after Donald helped the Rams win the Super Bowl in a dominant performance that left some wondering whether he would return the following season. The defensive tackle recently confirmed that he has been in talks with the team but hasn’t yet publicly announced a return.

Set on nearly an acre, the 7,036-square-foot mansion is found in the Oaks of Calabasas, a guard-gated, starstudded neighborhood with other celebrity residents over the years including actress Katie Holmes and rock singer Bret Michaels. Six bedrooms and seven bathrooms are spread across the two-story floor plan, which also includes a step-down lounge, openconcept kitchen and selfcontained guest quarters.

The star defender has an eye for decorating as well. Listing photos show that Donald made a few aesthetic changes during his stay, bringing sleek shades of gray to the living spaces and adding a barbershop.

The amenities continue outside, where a 1,500square-foot glass-covered patio overlooks an infinity swimming pool. A fireplace and basketball court complete the scene.

Considered one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, Donald was drafted by the Rams in 2014 and has racked up 441 tackles and 98 sacks in eight seasons. The Pittsburgh native has been named to eight Pro Bowls and thrice won the NFL defensive player of the year award, joining Lawrence Taylor and J.J. Watt as the only players to win the award three times.

Ball brother lands in Sherman Oaks

Chicago Bulls star Lonzo Ball is making his way to L.A., shelling out $7.25 million for a newly built house in the San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Sherman Oaks.

It’s a westward move for the point guard, who grew up in Chino Hills and became a star at Chino Hills High School before spending a year at UCLA and being drafted by the Lakers in 2017.

Shortly after being drafted, he spent $5.2 million on a 16,000-square-foot Chino Hills mansion, which became the headquarters for his basketball-centric family. His father, LaVar Ball, called it the “best house in an 80-mile radius.”

Ball’s latest purchase comes about a year after he inked a four-year deal with the Bulls worth $85 million. At 6,200 square feet, it’s a bit smaller than his previous place but comes with an accessory dwelling unit in case LaVar or his brother (and fellow NBA star) LaMelo comes for a visit.

Tucked on a cul-de-sac and reached by a long, private driveway, the modern residence boasts clean lines, open spaces and sliding walls of glass overlooking the valley below. Warm wood floors mix with shades of white and gray on the main level, which features a living room with a built-in fireplace and sleek kitchen with a marble island.

Elsewhere are six bedrooms and eight bathrooms, including a primary suite that expands to a private balcony. It’s joined by a second balcony, which descends via a spiral staircase to a scenic backyard complete with a swimming pool, spa, fire pit, bar and cabana. The grounds cover about three-quarters of an acre.

After leading Chino Hills to a state title and leading the nation in assists at UCLA, Ball was drafted by the Lakers as the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft. In 2021, he was traded to the Bulls, where he averaged 13 points per game before a knee injury ended his season.

Mayan-style listing in Glendale

Southern California boasts some of the country’s finest examples of Mayan Revival-style architecture, and gems such as the Ennis House and Hollyhock House showcase intricate patterns, precast concrete blocks and dramatic geometric designs that pay homage to the Mesoamerican form.

Most of these homes scattered across L.A. were designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. But Wright’s son, Lloyd Wright, was a savant in the style as well. His Derby House, a Mayan Revival-style residence in Glendale, just surfaced for sale at $3.295 million.

Dressed in ornamental interlocking concrete blocks that have come to define the architecture style, the home was built in 1926 for businessman James Derby and named to the National Register of Historic Places half a century later.

Over the years, the twostory residence has been preserved and upgraded. Today it holds five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a handful of unique spaces across 3,300 square feet.

The common spaces are a vibrant mix of concrete, wood and glass. The three materials mingle most in the living room — a double-height space with walls of windows and fireplace grates that resemble the yucca plants surrounding the home.

Long, narrow hallways cut through the floor plan, leading to lofts, nooks and other cozy spaces. The bathrooms provide bursts of color in the form of pink and purple tiles.

The main level leads to a backyard with statues and a patio, and the second story expands to a deck overlooking the surrounding hills. The asking price includes the four adjacent lots for a total of 1.5 acres.

Aaron Leider, Elham Shaoulian, Drew Carlson and Brandon Soufer of the Agency hold the listing.

Although less famous than his father, Wright amassed an impressive body of work during his four-decade career with highlights such as the Wayfarers Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes and the John Sowden House in Los Feliz.
