Judge postpones assault case

A judge postponed until Aug. 1 a hearing in a felony assault case involving two NFL players and two other men accused of severely beating a man at a Las Vegas nightclub the weekend of the Pro Bowl.

Attorneys for Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Chris Lammons, New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara and two other defendants have asked for more time to review evidence in the case.

Virginia’s attorney general has launched an inquiry into the Washington Commanders following allegation­s of financial impropriet­ies raised by a congressio­nal committee . ... Businessma­n Reginald Fowler, who was one of the early investors in a failed profession­al football league called the Alliance of American Football, pleaded guilty to charges accusing him in a $600-million cryptocurr­ency scheme . ... A jury has been selected in the civil trial of a man who was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2010 death of Virginia lacrosse player Yeardley Love. A wrongful death lawsuit brought by Love’s mother seeks to hold George Huguely V liable in Yeardley’s killing. Huguely and Love were both lacrosse players at Virginia and were in an on-again, off-again dating relationsh­ip. The lawsuit seeks $29.5 million in compensato­ry damages and $1 million in punitive damages. ... Testimony has begun in the trial of five men in Cape Town charged with murder in the shooting death of South Africa national soccer team captain Senzo Meyiwa eight years ago . ... Swimming’s world governing body FINA is investigat­ing after Russian swimmer Evgeny Rylov competed at the national championsh­ips while serving a ban for appearing at a rally in support of President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine . ... Bethany College officials are investigat­ing an allegation that someone associated with its baseball program intentiona­lly contaminat­ed the water cooler used by Kansas Wesleyan.

New England dealt a fifth-round pick (170th overall) to Houston for a sixthround pick (183rd overall) and seventh-round pick (245th overall) . ... The Pittsburgh Steelers are bringing back safety Terrell Edmunds on a one-year, $2.5million deal.

Michigan freshman Moussa Diabate is entering the NBA draft. The 6-foot-11 forward announced his plans a day after standout center Hunter Dickinson decided to return for his junior season . ... Three Southland teams received berths in the NCAA women’s water polo championsh­ip at Michigan. USC (18-3) received the No. 2 seed and will face Fresno State (19-7) in a quarterfin­al match May 6. President Joe Biden avoided politics in honoring the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning for winning the Stanley Cup in each of the past two seasons.
