We honor World Press Freedom Day.

Times photojournalists have entered a war zone to risk their lives for the sake of capturing the truth as it happens. Their photos have laid bare a grim reality of unimaginable violence, grief and suffering for the people of Ukraine. These stories can be hard to take in, but we mustn’t look away. This World Press Freedom Day, we celebrate the freedom to share the truth, and the bravery of those who do it. View more from Carolyn Cole, Marcus Yam and Wally Skalij:

“Residents seek refuge underground in a cold basement shelter in the Rohan district of Kharkiv, Ukraine.” -Marcus Yam

“A young Ukrainian refugee sits on a bus waiting to be transported to the next destination at the border in Medyka, Poland.” -Wally Skalij

“Evacuees continue to leave Kramatorsk, Ukraine, by bus and car since train service is no longer working after a Russian missile attack that killed 57 people last week.” -Carolyn Cole
