Pittsburgh gets three-OT win

Evgeni Malkin scored on a deflection 5:58 into the third overtime, giving the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 victory over the host New York Rangers in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series Tuesday night.

Jake Guentzel scored twice and Bryan Rust had a goal and two assists for the Penguins. Sidney Crosby also had two assists. Casey DeSmith had 48 saves before leaving the game midway through the second overtime.

Washington 4, at Florida

2: T.J. Oshie scored the goahead goal midway through the third period, Vitek Vanecek stopped 30 shots, and the Capitals rallied past the top-seeded Panthers in the opener of their Eastern Conference first-round series. Tom Wilson, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Lars Eller also scored for Washington, which trailed 2-1 going into the third period. Teams had been 0-39-1 against Florida in the regular season when trailing after 40 minutes, 022-0 when doing so on the Panthers’ home ice.

at Colorado 7, Nashville

2: Nathan MacKinnon and Devon Toews scored 22 seconds apart in a five-goal first period, sending Colorado to a Game 1 win in the firstround playoff series. The five goals tied the team playoff record for a period and chased Nashville’s backup goaltender David Rittich in the first period.

at Calgary 1, Dallas 0:

Elias Lindholm scored and Jacob Markstrom recorded his second career playoff shutout as the Flames beat the Stars in the opening game of their first-round playoff series. Lindholm scored a power-play goal early in the first. Markstrom stopped all 16 shots he faced as Calgary earned just its second playoff win at the Saddledome since 2015.
