Sacramento taps Brown as coach

The Sacramento Kings have agreed to hire Golden State assistant Mike Brown as their head coach.

A person familiar with the decision confirmed to the Associated Press that Brown will take over the franchise with the longest playoff drought in NBA history at 16 seasons. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t announced the hiring.

Brown had two stints as head coach in Cleveland, guiding the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in 2007. He also

had one stint as coach of the Lakers from 2011 to 2012.

Brown is expected to remain with the Warriors for the rest of their playoff run before joining Sacramento.

Spanish tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz, 19, earned a straight-sets victory over Alexander Zverev to win the Madrid Open and become the second-youngest player to win two Masters 1000 titles. His 6-3, 6-1 victory over Zverev followed victories over his idol Rafael Nadal in the quarterfin­als and topranked Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

Washington’s Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dallas’ Jamie Benn were fined $5,000 apiece by the NHL for high sticking on a pair of incidents that didn’t get penalized in playoff games.

Kuznetsov’s play against Florida’s Noel Acciari came in the Capitals’ 6-1 victory in Game 3 on Saturday, which put Washington up 2-1 in the Eastern Conference firstround series. Benn’s infraction

against Calgary’s Andrew Mangiapane was in the Stars’ 4-2 win in Game 3. Dallas leads the Western Conference first-round series 2-1.

Manchester City moved on from the disappoint­ment of its Champions League exit with a 5-0 rout of visiting Newcastle that moved the defending English Premier League soccer champions three points ahead of second-place Liverpool with three games left . ... Sam Kerr’s two goals helped host Chelsea clinch a third consecutiv­e Women’s Super League title by beating Manchester United 4-2.

In Major League Rugby, the Giltinis earned their seventh consecutiv­e win by edging the Austin Gilgronis 10-8 at the Coliseum . ... Mark Cavendish marked his return to the Giro d’Italia cycling race by winning a bunch sprint at the end of the third stage, while Mathieu van der Poel kept hold of the pink jersey.
