Saban denies tamper charge

Alabama coach Nick Saban denied that anybody from his program had contact with receiver Tyler Harrell before the former Louisville player entered the transfer portal, which would have violated NCAA rules.

Saban responded to a suggestion from Louisville coach Scott Satterfiel­d that Alabama had tampered with Harrell, who has since transferre­d to the Crimson Tide.

Former Texas A&M guard Hassan Diarra said he is transferri­ng to Connecticu­t. Diarra made the decision public on Twitter and later confirmed it in an interview with Hearst Connecticu­t Media . ... South Carolina is adding Jacksonvil­le State to its 2023 football schedule. ... Iowa assistant Kirk Speraw will retire on June 30 after 43 years coaching college basketball, head coach Fran McCaffery said.

Defender Owen Lambe, signed to a short-term loan just hours before kickoff, broke open a tie score with a goal in the 80th minute, sparking the Galaxy to 3-2 win over the California United Strikers in a fourthroun­d U.S. Open Cup game at the Orange County Great Park. Dejan Joveljic scored the Galaxy’s other two goals on penalty kicks.

Sonny Leon, the jockey of Kentucky Derby upset winner Rich Strike, is serving a four-day suspension handed down by Ohio racing stewards that his agent says won’t prevent him from riding the horse in next week’s Preakness.

Rafael Nadal has never lost consecutiv­e matches on clay surface and the Spaniard extended that perfect record by beating John Isner 6-3, 6-1 to reach the third round of the Italian Open. Nadal was coming off a loss to Carlos Alcaraz, 19, in the Madrid Open quarterfin­als last week.

Kicker Josh Lambo’s lawsuit against the Jacksonvil­le Jaguars could uncover more details about former coach Urban Meyer’s tumultuous NFL tenure. Lambo’s attorney is seeking records pertaining to Meyer’s time with the team, including “any documentat­ion whatsoever of abusive or toxic workplace behavior under Meyer’s leadership and any investigat­ions into these allegation­s.”

The Ducks fired San Diego Gulls coach Joel Bouchard and assistant coaches Daniel Jacob and Max Talbot. All three had joined the AHL club before the 2021-22 season. Also, Ducks assistant coach Geoff Ward left the club for personal reasons, the team said.
