Panthers overcome early deficit to win

Carter Verhaeghe set a Florida postseason record with a five-point night, and the Panthers overcame a three-goal deficit to beat the Washington Capitals 5-3 at Sunrise, Fla., in Game 5 and take a 3-2 lead in an Eastern Conference first-round series Wednesday night.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 28 shots for Florida, which trailed 3-0 in the second period. Verhaeghe had two goals and three assists for the Panthers.

Patric Hornqvist, Claude Giroux and Sam Reinhart also scored for the Panthers, and Aleksander Barkov had two assists.

T.J. Oshie scored twice for Washington.

Verhaeghe broke the Panthers’ playoff scoring record that Ray Sheppard set on a four-point night on April 22, 1996 — which remains the last, and only, season in which the Panthers won a playoff series.

at New York Rangers 5, Pittsburgh 3:

Filip Chytil scored the tiebreakin­g goal early in the third period and the Rangers staved off eliminatio­n with a victory over Pittsburgh in Game 5.

Jacob Trouba and Alexis Lafreniere each had a goal and an assist, and Adam Fox and Ryan Lindgren also scored for the Rangers.

Penguins star Sidney Crosby left with about seven minutes left in the second period with an apparent injury and didn’t return.

at Calgary 3, Dallas 1:

Andrew Mangiapane scored the go-ahead goal 10:38 into the third period as the Flames took a 3-2 series lead over the Stars after a Game 5 victory.

After Arcadia native Jason Robertson gave Dallas a 1-0 lead in the second period, the Flames responded with a big third.

Mikael Backlund tied it at 6:49 of the third and Trevor Lewis added an emptynet goal with 58 seconds left.
