Tortorella hired as Flyers coach

The Philadelph­ia Flyers hired John Tortorella as their new coach, hoping the fiery veteran can help lead them to their first Stanley Cup championsh­ip since 1975.

The hire was confirmed by the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it had not been announced. The official announceme­nt is expected Friday.

Tortorella coached Tampa Bay to a Stanley Cup title in 2004, and he also coached the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks. He was fired in May 2021 after six seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Vegas Golden Knights acquired defenseman Shea Weber from the Montreal Canadiens for forward Evgenii Dadonov. Weber, 36, will remain on injured reserve, according to Vegas . ... The salary cap for the 2022-23 NHL season will have an upper limit of $82.5 million, the NHL Players’ Assn. and NHL announced. The lower limit will be $61 million.

The NCAA’s Division I transforma­tion committee will recommend establishi­ng designated time periods when college athletes can declare their intent to transfer and be eligible immediatel­y at a new school.

The transfer windows would be set on a sport-bysport basis. The hope is they will provide some structure and clarity for both athletes and coaches.

In football, the coaches’ associatio­n has proposed two windows to enter the transfer portals — one right after the regular season to line up with the early signing period for high school recruits and one after spring practice.

The committee said it is also making recommenda­tions to the Division I Board of Directors to update the NCAA infraction­s process to make changes that will promote timeliness of investigat­ions and hold accountabl­e those who are directly involved in the rule-breaking.

Jadeveon Clowney said that Cleveland’s acquisitio­n of controvers­ial quarterbac­k Deshaun Watson, his former teammate in Houston, was the main reason behind the defensive end’s decision to return to the Browns.
