Raised in Detroit, Fred attended Cooley High School. During his high school years, he was very active in the Boy Scouts and attained Eagle Scout rank, serving as a summer camp leader while still in his teens.

After graduating from high school, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy and trained as a radar operator, but the war ended before he deployed. On his discharge from the service, Fred attended UCLA and graduated from the School of Engineering. While in college, he met Kathleen Call, fondly known as “Jo”, to whom he would be married for over 60 years.

Fred received his degree in engineering and subsequently graduated from the General Electric Lighting School. He then worked with pioneers in microwave technology. Several of his early business ventures involved microwave equipment design, construction, and application.

A serial entrepreneur and turnaround specialist during the postwar era of conglomerates, Fred presided over many businesses and ultimately founded Baifield Industries with his associate and business partner James Upfield of Texas. Late in his business career, Fred became interested in the human potential movement and served as a board member of the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA in the 1960’s.

Fred retired from the business world in 1969 and, with Jo, lived in Malibu for over 40 years. Travelling extensively after retirement, they visited Europe yearly, and especially loved Paris and Switzerland.

Fred was a lifelong lover of music, a love which sustained him throughout his life, especially during his later years. He loved all animals.

Fred’s beloved wife Jo passed away in 2015. He is survived by his children Glenn, Phillip, Linda and Anne, his grandchildren Michael and Bailey and great-grandson Rory. Services are pending.
