Toronto’s Matthews named NHL MVP

Toronto’s Auston Matthews won the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player, beating out Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Igor Shesterkin of the New York Rangers to win the award for the first time.

Shesterkin claimed the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender. Colorado’s Cale Maker took the Norris Trophy, presented to the league’s best defenseman, and Detroit’s Moritz Seider claimed the Calder Trophy as the top rookie. Seider finished ahead of Toronto’s Michael Bunting and the Ducks’ Trevor Zegras in balloting for the award.

The Dallas Stars announced Peter DeBoer will be their new coach a month after he was fired by the Vegas Golden Knights . ... The Edmonton Oilers gave coach Jay Woodcroft a three-year contract extension.

Brooks Koepka is the latest PGA Tour player to sign on with the Saudi-funded LIV Golf series, the AP has learned. Koepka withdrew late Tuesday night from the Travelers Championsh­ip, the PGA Tour said . ... The KPMG Women’s PGA Championsh­ip is doubling the size of its purse to $9 million.

The California Horse Racing Board issued a complaint against trainer Richard Baltas alleging 23 counts of violating the rule dealing with the administra­tion of medication­s after a horse has been entered, 23 counts of violating the trainer’s insurer rule and one count of conduct detrimenta­l to racing.

Nathan Dettmer pitched three-hit ball over seven shutout innings, and Texas A&M capitalize­d on Notre Dame’s mistakes to beat the Fighting Irish 5-1 in an eliminatio­n game.

The seedings for Wimbledon were announced, with Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal being Nos. 1 and 2, respective­ly, in the men’s draw. There will be a 23-time Grand Slam winner in the women’s draw in Serena Williams, but she will not be seeded. Iga Swiatek will be the top-seeded player.

Hungary’s Kristof Milak thrilled home fans by lowering his own world record in the men’s 200 butterfly at the swimming world championsh­ips, and American swimmers claimed three more gold medals. The 22-year-old Milak produced a stunning swim to clock 1 minute, 50.34 seconds and earn Hungary its first gold medal of the competitio­n.

Jordan Ott, an assistant with the Brooklyn Nets, is joining the Lakers as an assistant, The Times confirmed.
