Williams loses in return to singles

Venus Williams lost to Canadian Rebecca Marino in her return to singles play after almost a year away. Williams lost 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the Citi Open in Washington. It was her first singles match since Aug. 23, 2021. In other action on the women’s side, topseeded Jessica Pegula beat fellow American Hailey Baptiste 6-2, 6-2 and former top-ranked Simona Halep defeated Cristina Bucsa of Spain 6-3, 7-5. Mikael Ymer. Countryman Kyle Edmund defeated qualifier Yosuke Watanuki 6-4, 7-6 (8) to win his first ATP Tour-level singles match since October 2020.

Luke Donald is Europe’s new captain for the Ryder Cup in Italy next year, replacing Henrik Stenson, who went back on his pledge to support Europe by signing with Saudi-funded LIV Golf. The European Tour stripped Stenson of the job. Donald is a four-time Ryder Cup player who has never played on a losing team and is a former No. 1 player in the world. The matches are September 2023 at Marco Simone in Italy. Donald is keeping Thomas Bjorn and Edoardo Molinari as vice captains . ... The PGA Tour announced a new schedule that puts prize money near $500 million next season.

East Tennessee State athletic director Scott Carter resigned and the school announced it plans to fire women’s basketball coach Simon Harris over Title IX complaints in his lone season . ... An Iowa-based youth basketball league, Barnstorme­rs Basketball of Iowa, agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by former players whose coach secretly recorded them undressing or obtained nude photos of them and is now serving a lengthy prison sentence for sexual exploitati­on of minors.

Arkansas will face Louisville in the opening round of a loaded 2022 Maui Invitation­al bracket. The eight-team bracket will include six teams that went to the 2022 NCAA men’s basketball tournament, including three that reached the Sweet 16. Arizona faces Cincinnati in the opening round, Texas Tech plays Creighton and San Diego State faces Ohio State in the tournament’s return to the Lahaina Civic Center on Nov. 21-23.

Two-time national high school coach of the year Sean Brosnan was hired as an assistant coach for the UCLA track and cross country teams. Brosnan led the boys’ cross country team at Newbury Park High School to the No. 1 national ranking in each of the last three seasons.

Glendora American won the Southern California Little League State Championsh­ip, defeating Del Rey American 10-2 in the championsh­ip game in Eastvale. Glendora is the second straight Los Angeles County team to win a Southern California

title. Torrance won last year and San Diego and Orange counties had accounted for 20 of the prior 23 Southern California champions. Glendora American will open West Regional play in San Bernardino at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, taking on Hawaii state champion Honolulu.
