Yankees’ Benintendi needs wrist surgery

New York Yankees outfielder Andrew Benintendi has a broken bone in his right wrist that will necessitat­e surgery, but he said he didn’t know whether it was a season-ending injury.

Benintendi’s wrist will be further examined by doctors Monday in New York. Benintendi, 28, was an All-Star this season with Kansas City and was traded to the Yankees in late July. He is batting .304 with 51 RBIs.

New York Mets ace Max Scherzer said he felt fine a day after he exited a start because of fatigue on his left side . ... Minnesota put right-hander Tyler Mahle (shoulder inflammati­on) back on the 15-day injured list . ... Texas designated left-hander Dallas Keuchel for assignment . ... Detroit put designated hitter Miguel Cabrera (left biceps strain) on the 10day IL . ... A Texas judge declared a mistrial in the child sex assault case against former All-Star reliever and World Series most valuable player John Wetteland, 56, after the jury deadlocked. The Denton County jury told Judge Lee Ann Breading three times that it was split before she declared a mistrial Friday.

Brianne Jenner scored twice in the second period, and Canada defended its title with a 2-1 victory over the United States in the women’s world hockey championsh­ip final in Herning, Denmark. Ann-Renee Desbiens made 20 saves for Canada, which won gold in a third major internatio­nal event in the span of a year. Abby Roque scored for the Americans.

Reilyn Turner scored a tiebreakin­g goal in the 84th minute, lifting the No. 3-ranked UCLA women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over No. 1 North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The win capped a road sweep of the nation’s top two teams over a four-day span. The Bruins won 2-1 at No. 2 Duke on Thursday. Lexi Wright scored the tying goal for UCLA (5-0) in the 61st minute Sunday. North Carolina fell to 5-1.

Shyheim Brown blocked Louisiana State’s extra-point try with no time left to give Florida State a 24-23 victory in New Orleans, spoiling Brian Kelly’s debut as Tigers coach. Florida State’s Treshaun Ward fumbled at the LSU one-yard line with 1:20 to go, and Tigers quarterbac­k Jayden Daniels drove LSU for a touchdown on a two-yard pass to Jaray Jenkins with no time left. The Seminoles improved to 2-0.

South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley said she did not want her players in line for verbal abuse at Brigham Young, which is why she chose to call off the schools’ home-andhome series. When Staley heard the account of Duke volleyball player Rachel Richardson’s experience at BYU — Richardson said she heard a racial slur directed at her — Staley “did not want to put her players in that situation.”

USA Basketball needed a win at the AmeriCup tournament and was on its way to making that happen. Then it rained.
