U.S. women stretch win streak to 13

Rose Lavelle scored the goahead goal and the U.S. women’s national soccer team won its 13th straight match, 2-1 over Nigeria on Tuesday night in Washington.

The United States also benefited from an own goal to extend the team’s unbeaten streak on American soil to 71 games.

The teams first met Saturday in Kansas City, Kan., and the United States came away with a 4-0 victory. Nigeria was missing six starters because of injuries and visa issues.

The own goal gave the U.S. an early lead in the 24th minute, but Nigeria equalized on Uchenna Kanu’s score after the break.

It was the first goal that the United States has given up this year. The goal also ended a nine-game shutout streak for the Americans.

The U.S. pulled back in front with Lavelle’s goal off a cross from Megan Rapinoe in the 66th minute. It was Lavelle’s fourth goal of the year.

USC back in top 10 of Associated Press poll

For the first time in nearly five years, USC’s football team moved into the top 10 of the Associated Press top 25 poll.

The Trojans slotted in at No. 10 after their dominant debut win over Rice, making them the highest-ranked team in the Pac-12 Conference.

Utah fell six spots to No. 13 after losing to Florida, while Oregon tumbled all the way out of the top 25 after its blowout loss to Georgia, which rose to No. 2, passing Ohio State. Alabama remained No. 1.

Harrell reunites with Rivers on the 76ers

The Philadelph­ia 76ers got some backup big man help for Joel Embiid, agreeing to a two-year contract with center Montrezl Harrell ina move that will reunite him with coach Doc Rivers, the Associated Press reported.

Harrell was sixth man of the year in 2019-20 when Rivers coached the Clippers. Harrell averaged 13.1 points and 6.1 rebounds in 71 games last season with Washington and Charlotte.

The Chicago Bears plan to build an enclosed suburban stadium that could host Super Bowls, College Football Playoff games and Final Fours . ... Pittsburgh is retiring the No. 32 worn by Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris in December.

Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant Britt Reid was scheduled to enter a guilty plea to felony driving while intoxicate­d related to a car crash that seriously injured a girl. He faces up to seven years in prison, the Kansas City Star reported.

Guy Morriss, a 15-year NFL offensive lineman who played in Super Bowls with Philadelph­ia and New England before coaching at Baylor and Kentucky, has died. He was 71.

The United States rolled into the AmeriCup basketball quarterfin­als by beating Venezuela 101-49 in a game that started Sunday, was interrupte­d because of leaks caused by rain, then resumed 48 hours later — with both teams playing another game in between . ... Giannis Antetokoun­mpo scored 41 points in 27 minutes for Greece, Luka Doncic had 36 points for Slovenia, and twotime reigning NBA most valuable player Nikola Jokic scored 29 points for Serbia, all three leading their teams to big group-stage wins at the European championsh­ips.

Atlanta United’s Miles Robinson was arrested on a misdemeano­r theft charge. The Atlanta Journal-Constituti­on reports Robinson is accused of taking a shot of liquor and declining to pay for it . ...
