Nebraska fires embattled Frost

Nebraska fired Scott Frost, the situation so dire in the once-proud football program that athletic director Trev Alberts made the move only three weeks before the coach’s contract buyout would have been cut in half.

The Cornhusker­s lost 4542 to Georgia Southern as a three-touchdown favorite at home Saturday night. Frost was 16-31 three games into his fifth season, and his .340 winning percentage was second worst among Nebraska coaches who lasted more than four years.

Associate head coach Mickey Joseph was named interim coach for the rest of the season.

Joseph, 54, is the first Black head coach at Nebraska in any sport and among four new members of the staff this season.

Georgia reclaimed the top spot in the Associated Press college football poll, and Kentucky, Oklahoma State and Arkansas moved into the top 10 after an upset-filled weekend across the country. Oklahoma moved up a spot to No. 6, USC three spots to No. 7.

Ally Ewing ran off five straight birdies on the back nine and closed with a sevenunder 65 to hold off Xiyu Lin and win the Kroger Queen City Championsh­ip in the LPGA Tour’s return to Cincinnati. Ewing has three career wins, one in each of the last three years . ... Shane Lowry shot a seven-under 65 for a one-shot victory over Rory McIlroy at the BMW PGA Championsh­ip in England. Lowry, who earned his first win since the British Open in 2019, said the title was for all the golfers who, like him, have rejected the lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia-backed breakaway series LIV Golf . ... Padraig Harrington had seven birdies in a closing round of three-under 68 for a oneshot victory over Y.E. Yang (66) in the Ascension Charity Classic in St. Louis, his third title this year on the PGA Tour Champions.

Gary Clark scored 18 points and the U.S. rallied in the final minutes to top Canada 84-80 in the bronzemeda­l game of the AmeriCup in Brazil. The Americans went on a 26-10 run over a seven-minute stretch of the final quarter, turning a 63-56 deficit into an 82-73 lead. In the gold medal game, Gabriel Deck’s layup with 16.1 seconds left lifted Argentina past Brazil 75-73. ... In Eurobasket in Berlin, Ukraine’s run ended with a 94-86 loss to Poland, which will face Luka Doncic and defending champion Slovenia in a quarterfin­al game Wednesday. Lauri Markkanen scored 43 points for Finland in a 94-86 win over Croatia for its first quarterfin­als berth since 1967.

American forward Jordan Pefok had a penalty saved but Union Berlin held on to win 1-0 at previously unbeaten Cologne to move atop the Bundesliga for the first time . ... American forward Ricardo Pepi had an assist in his debut for Groningen, a 1-0 win at Cambuur in the Dutch league.

Remco Evenepoel won the Spanish Vuelta in Madrid for his first Grand Tour victory, two years after a horrific crash left him hospitaliz­ed for several days.

Anthony Varvaro, a former Major League Baseball pitcher who retired in 2016 to become a police officer in the New York City area, was killed in a car accident on his way to work at the Sept. 11 memorial ceremony in Manhattan, according to police officials and his former teams. He was 37 . ... Larry Yarbray Sr., a former Coppin State basketball player who holds the school’s career record for assists, died Saturday in a bicycle crash, according to police. He was 51.
