Maxine Kern Miller of San Pedro, California, passed away on October 23, 2022 at the age of 102. She was born in Junction City, Kansas, the daughter of Nellie and Clinton Kern. In 1941, she married Capt. Whitside (Whit) Miller, of the U.S. Cavalry. Maxine was an active volunteer in many groups, including Hollywood Bowl Volunteers president, Assistance League of San Pedro, Retired Officers’ Wives of Ft. MacArthur, and one of the founders of the Auxiliary of Toberman Settlement House of San Pedro, of which she was president 4 times. She is survived by four of her five children, Janet Simkins, Whitside G. (Gerry) Miller, Linda Cibel, and Debbie Klett, as well as 6 grandchild­ren and 16 greatgrand­children. She was pre-deceased by her husband Whitside, son Gregory K. Miller, and granddaugh­ter Tasha Montelongo. Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 9:00AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in San Pedro with burial to follow at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. McNerney’s Mortuary in San Pedro is in charge of the arrangemen­ts. Donations in her honor can be made to Toberman Neighborho­od Center of San Pedro.
