Hot-shooting Texas routs No. 2 Gonzaga
Tyrese Hunter scored 26 points and a led a threepoint shooting barrage for No. 11 Texas that carried the Longhorns to a 93-74 home win over No. 2 Gonzaga on Wednesday night at Austin.
Hunter, last season’s Big 12 freshman of the year at Iowa State, was nine-for-14 shooting and made five of Texas’ 13 three-pointers. He made three from long range in the opening minutes of the second half as the Longhorns seized control.
Texas (3-0) shut down Gonzaga All-American forward Drew Timme for long stretches and rendered him mostly ineffective when the game was close. Two of his first four shots were airballs against switching doubleteam defenses.
Marcus Carr added 16 points for Texas. Timme led Gonzaga (2-1) with 18 points.
at No. 3 Houston 83, Texas Southern 48:
Marcus Sasser scored 20 points and Jarace Walker had 19 to help the Cougars (4-0) rout the Tigers (1-4). Houston shot 52% from the field.
at No. 9 Arkansas 71, South Dakota State 56: Ricky Council scored 19 points and the Razorbacks (3-0) used a 10-2 run over the last two minutes of the first half to build a double-digit lead in a victory over the Jackrabbits (2-2) at Fayetteville.
Women
No. 7 Iowa State 88, at Northern Iowa 85: Ashley Joens scored 26 points, Stephanie Soares had 23 and the Cyclones (3-0) edged the Panthers (2-1) at Cedar Falls.
at No. 25 Utah 124, No. 16 Oklahoma 78:
Gianna Kneepkens scored 24 points, Kennady McQueen and Alissa Pili had 21 apiece as the Utes (4-0) tied the school record for points in a game in routing the Sooners (3-1).
