Historic dunk in women’s basketball

Freshman forward Ashlyn Watkins became the first Gamecock to record a dunk in a game, and the ninth player in Division I NCAA women’s college basketball history to do so during topranked South Carolina’s 8531 win over Clemson on Thursday.

Late in the fourth quarter, Watkins — a 6-foot-3 former McDonald’s All American dunk champion — stole the ball from a Clemson player before dribbling down the f loor on a breakaway and throwing it down with her right hand. The players on the Gamecocks bench erupted in celebratio­n.

at Kansas State 84, No. 4

Iowa 83: Gabby Gregory hit a free throw with four seconds left to put the Wildcats on top. Iowa led for most of the game. Kansas State had the lead for just under two minutes. Iowa was the highest-ranked opponent the Wildcats have beaten in school history. The Hawkeyes’ No. 4 ranking was their highest in nearly 30 years.

at No. 4 Kentucky 106, South Carolina State 63: CJ Fredrick scored 17 points to lead Kentucky to a win over South Carolina State. The Wildcats (3-1) bounced back from an 86-77 double-overtime loss to unranked Michigan State two nights earlier in the Champions Classic. Chris Livingston scored 13 points. Kentucky got 51 points from its bench.

Arizona State 87, No. 20

Michigan 62: Desmond Cambridge Jr. scored 20 points and Arizona State never trailed in blowing out Michigan to win the Legends Classic at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. DJ Horne added 19 points, Austin Nunez had 15 and Luther Muhammad

scored 13 for the Sun Devils (4-1), who reached the title game by overcoming an 11point deficit in the final nine minutes of a 63-59 victory Wednesday over VCU.

Murray State 88, No. 24

Texas A&M 79: JaCobi Wood scored 23 points and Murray State took down Texas A&M in the Myrtle Beach Invitation­al. The Racers (2-1) will take on Massachuse­tts in the semifinals while Texas A&M (2-1) faces Colorado. The win was the first for Murray State over a ranked team in a decade. The Aggies made their first appearance this week in the Associated Press top 25 since Jan. 1, 2017.
