Volunteers’ Hooker tears ACL

Tennessee quarterbac­k Hendon Hooker will miss the rest of the season after injuring his left knee in the fourth quarter of the ninthranke­d Volunteers’ loss to South Carolina on Saturday.

Tennessee said Sunday that Hooker had a torn anterior cruciate ligament and thanked the fifthyear senior transfer from Virginia Tech for being part of the Volunteers’ resurgence.

Hooker has been one of the best quarterbac­ks in the country and a leading Heisman Trophy contender as the Volunteers became a surprise entry into the College Football Playoff race.

USC moved into the top five of the Associated Press college football poll for the first time in five years. Georgia received 62 of the 63 first-place votes in the AP Top 25 as the top four teams held their places after playing close games Saturday. No. 2 Ohio State received the other first-place vote. Michigan was No. 3 again, followed by Texas Christian . ... Longtime Connecticu­t women’s basketball associate head coach Chris Dailey gave her team a scare when she fainted before the start of the No. 5 Huskies’ game against No. 10 North Carolina State. Coach Geno Auriemma said after the game that Dailey is OK and “there’s nothing serious, nothing threatenin­g.” ... Erin Matson redirected a Paityn Wirth shot with 1:19 left and the play gave topseeded North Carolina a 2-1 win over No. 2-seed Northweste­rn in the NCAA women’s field hockey championsh­ip game in Storrs, Conn . ... Tucker Lepley’s secondhalf goal lifted the UCLA men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over host Clemson in the second round of the NCAA championsh­ips . ... Reilyn Turner and Quincy McMahon each scored a goal as the UCLA women’s soccer team beat visiting Northweste­rn 2-0 in the third round of the NCAA championsh­ips . ... Authoritie­s say New Mexico State basketball player Mike Peake was involved in the fatal shooting of a student from New Mexico hours before the scheduled tipoff of a basketball game between the rival schools that was later postponed. State police said the 19year-old New Mexico student was declared dead at the scene of the shooting around 3 a.m. Saturday following a shootout outside a dormitory. Peake, who had been lured into an ambush, authoritie­s said, was wounded in the shootout and listed as stable.
