Cashman, Yankees sign four-year deal

Brian Cashman signed a four-year contract to remain the New York Yankees senior vice president and general manager. The announcement was made during the first day of baseball’s winter meetings.

Cashman, New York’s GM since 1998, had been working on a handshake agreement since early November, when his five-year contract expired.

The Yankees were swept in four games in the American League Championship Series and haven’t reached the World Series since winning it in 2009. It is their longest title drought since an 18year gap from 1978 to 1996.

Cashman’s main goal during the offseason is trying to re-sign AL most valuable player Aaron Judge.

Judge hit an AL-record 62 homers this year. He turned down an offer on the eve of opening day of a seven-year contract that would have paid him $213.5 million from 2023 to 2029.

While Judge remains on the market, Cashman was able to re-sign Anthony Rizzo to a two-year contract worth $40 million.

All-MLB team

Angels superstars Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts and former Dodgers shortstop Trea Turner were first-team All-MLB picks.

Dodgers catcher Will Smith, first baseman Freddie Freeman and pitcher Julio Urías were secondteam picks. Ohtani, who made the first-team as a pitcher, was a second-team pick as designated hitter.

Etc.

Right-hander Kyle Gibson and the Baltimore Orioles finalized a $10-million, one-year contract.
