NBA, players union extend deadline on CBA

The NBA and the National Basketball Players Assn. are giving each other more time to decide if they want to opt out of the league’s current collective bargaining agreement, a person with knowledge of the talks said Friday.

The new opt-out date — which was going to be Thursday — will be set for early 2023 and could be moved again depending on the progress of talks, said the person who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because nothing was revealed by either the NBA or NBPA.

Sportswrit­er dies at World Cup

Award-winning sportswrit­er Grant Wahl, best known for his work with Sports Illustrate­d and Fox Soccer, collapsed in the media tribune at Friday’s Argentina-Netherland­s World Cup game in Qatar. Paramedics treated Wahl for about 30 minutes before removing him from the stadium on a stretcher. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. He was 49.

The cause of death, which was confirmed by U.S. Soccer, is unknown.

The Chargers announced that safety Derwin James Jr. (quadriceps) and cornerback Bryce Callahan (core muscle) are doubtful for the game Sunday against Miami. Those losses would be significan­t against a Dolphins team that is second in the NFL in passing offense.

Also doubtful are defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day (knee) and tackle Trey Pipkins III (knee). The Chargers will get back center Corey Linsley (concussion) and wide receiver Mike Williams (ankle).
