Warriors complete deal for Payton

The Golden State Warriors decided to complete last week’s fourteam trade to acquire Gary Payton II from the Portland Trail Blazers despite concerns that arose surroundin­g the guard’s health after offseason surgery for a core muscle injury that sidelined him until last month.

Payton’s physical Friday brought up issues that put the trade in jeopardy.

The defending champion Warriors had until Sunday night to decide whether to rescind the swap that sent center James Wiseman to Detroit.

Golden State also will receive unprotecte­d 2026 and 2028 secondroun­d draft picks from Portland while giving up Memphis’ 2026 second-round pick and its own 2028 second-round choice to Portland.
