Padres’ Machado says he’ll opt out

Manny Machado said he plans to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract with the San Diego Padres after this season.

Machado signed a 10year, $300-million deal with the Padres in February 2019, a deal that gives him the right to terminate the agreement after this season and become a free agent. The third baseman, who turns 31 in July, would forfeit $150 million from his current deal, which calls for a $30-million annual salary through 2028.

The Pittsburgh Pirates beat first baseman Ji-Man Choi in salary arbitratio­n as Choi got a raise from $3.2 million to $4.65 million instead of his $5.4-million request . ... Reliever Jose Alvarado and the Philadelph­ia Phillies agreed to a $22-million, three-year contract . ... Scott Rolen will have a St. Louis Cardinals cap on his Hall of Fame plaque and fellow inductee Fred McGriff — who played for six teams — will not have a team logo.

Eric Bieniemy was finalizing terms of a deal to become the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinato­r and assistant head coach after a stint as a twotime Super Bowl-winning assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs . ... Free agent quarterbac­k Derek Carr is meeting with the New York Jets this weekend . ... New England Patriots receiver Matt Slater, 37, has decided to return for his 16th season. ...Running back Aaron Jones agreed to remain with the Green Bay Packers on a restructur­ed deal with a reduced salary.

The Carolina Panthers announced that they hired Thomas Brown as offensive coordinato­r.

Brown was the Rams assistant head coach, and he had coached running backs and tight ends during his three seasons on Sean McVay’s staff.

In January, McVay passed over Brown and other potential internal candidates when he hired Mike LaFleur to replace offensive coordinato­r Liam Coen.

Brown was instrument­al in helping to develop Cam Akers.

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forwards Ryan O’Reilly and Noel Acciari from the St. Louis Blues in a three-team trade with the Minnesota Wild.

Toronto sent forwards Mikhail Abramov and Adam Gaudette, a 2023 firstround draft pick, Ottawa’s 2023 third-round selection and the Leafs’ 2024 secondroun­d choice to St. Louis. Minnesota gets Toronto’s 2025 fourth-round selection.
