Toews out with long COVID-19 symptoms

Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews announced that he is dealing with symptoms of long COVID-19 and chronic immune response syndrome.

Toews hasn’t played since Jan. 28. The Blackhawks placed the 34-year-old center on injured reserve Wednesday with what they said was a non-COVIDrelat­ed illness.

“It has been really challengin­g to play through these symptoms,” Toews said in a statement. “In the last few weeks, it has reached the point where I had no choice but to step back and concentrat­e on getting healthy. I am thankful for the patience and support of my teammates, the coaching staff, and the entire Blackhawks organizati­on.”

Toews missed the 2020-21 season with what he described as chronic immune response syndrome.

Toews has spent his entire career with Chicago, winning three Stanley Cup titles. But he is eligible for free agency after this season.

The New York Rangers traded right winger Julien Gauthier to the Ottawa Senators for left winger Tyler Motte. Ottawa also received a conditiona­l seventh-round pick in the draft.

Neymar was injured at the start of the second half after the Brazilian forward scored PSG’s second goal before the interval.

Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz won his first title since his milestone U.S. Open triumph by beating Cameron Norrie in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 at the Argentina Open . ... Sixth-seeded Daniil Medvedev rallied past Jannik Sinner 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 at the Rotterdam Open to win his 16th title.

Bernhard Langer matched Hale Irwin’s PGA Tour Champions victory record of 45, shooting a seven-under 65 to win the Chubb Classic for the fifth time at Naples, Fla. Langer also won Chubb titles in 2011, 2013, 2016 and 2022. ... Lydia Ko began the new year the same way she ended 2022, with a big win and a big check as she closed with a four-under 68 to win the Aramco Saudi Ladies Internatio­nal . ... Thorbjorn Olesen claimed his seventh European Tour title with a four-shot victory in the Thailand Classic at the Amata Spring Country Club.

Greek racer AJ Ginnis finished runner-up to gold medalist Henrik Kristoffer­sen of Norway in the men’s slalom at the Alpine skiing world championsh­ips in Courchevel, France, to earn his country its first medal at a world championsh­ip in any Olympic sport on snow or ice.

Femke Bol broke a 40-year-old world indoor record in the women’s 400 meters, covering the distance in 49.26 seconds at the Dutch Indoor Championsh­ips in Apeldoorn, Netherland­s.

Bulldog Hanover, who last year became the fastest horse in harness racing history, is the sport’s first unanimous selection for horse of the year.
