U.S. tops Brazil to win Cup

Alex Morgan and Mallory Swanson scored and the United States defeated Brazil 2-1 in Frisco, Texas, to win the SheBelieve­s Cup for the fourth straight year.

Japan, which defeated Canada 3-0 in the earlier match, was runner-up in the four-team, round-robin tournament. All four SheBelieve­s Cup teams will play in the Women’s World Cup this summer in Australia and New Zealand. Morgan’s curling goal sailed out of reach of Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena. Morgan has five career goals in SheBelieve­s matches.

The Toronto Maple Leafs said that defenseman Jake Muzzin won’t suit up again in 2022-23 after initially suffering a neck injury Oct. 17 in a collision with Arizona Coyotes forward Clayton Keller. Toronto said in November that the former King would be reevaluate­d in February . ... Alex Ovechkin returned to the Washington Capitals after missing four games because of the death of his father, Mikhail . ... The Arizona Coyotes traded defenseman Dysin Mayo to the Vegas Golden Knights for a 2023 fifth-round draft pick. ... In Laval, Canada, Blayre Turnbull scored twice in a 32-second span midway through the second period and Canada overcame a three-game deficit to win the women’s Rivalry Series, beating the United States 5-0 in Game 7.

Santa Anita canceled three weekend racing cards because of impending rain, snow and cold temperatur­es. Friday’s card was canceled earlier this week and on Wednesday the track announced there will be no racing on Saturday and Sunday. — John Cherwa

UCLA was expected to hire Baltimore Ravens safeties coach D’Anton Lynn as its new defensive coordinato­r to replace Bill McGovern in the wake of McGovern’s ongoing health concerns, according to multiple reports. Hiring Lynn, the 33year-old son of former Chargers coach Anthony Lynn, would be a massive departure for UCLA coach Chip Kelly given his history of employing old friends as defensive coordinato­r. — Ben Bolch
