Knight’s hat trick lifts U.S. to title

Hilary Knight scored three times, including the go-ahead goal with 3:10 left in regulation, and the U.S. won its 10th women’s world hockey championsh­ips gold medal and first in four years with a 6-3 victory over rival Canada in Brampton, Canada.

“It's been a while,” Knight said of winning her ninth tournament gold, but first since 2019. “It’s hard to beat Canada. It’s hard to be Canada in Canada, right? So we definitely felt like an underdog,” she added. “People are always rooting against us, but somehow we persevere and it feels sweeter that way.”

Caroline Harvey had a goal and assist for the Americans, who scored four unanswered goals during the third period. Aerin Frankel stopped 24 shots for the United States.

Brianne Jenner scored twice and had an assist for Canada, which was seeking its 13th tournament title.

The Canadian government restored funding to Hockey Canada. It had been shut off by the federal government and a number of sponsors pulled funding for Hockey Canada since May, when it was revealed that a woman alleged she was sexually assaulted by eight players — including members of the 2018 world junior team — after a foundation gala in February 2018.

To have its funding reinstated, Hockey Canada needed to meet multiple conditions, including becoming a full signatory to Abuse-Free Sport.

Ohio State offensive coordinato­r Brian Hartline was hospitaliz­ed after an ATV accident on his property. According to a statement, Hartline and an unidentifi­ed friend were transporte­d to Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, with “non-life threatenin­g injuries.”

Fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev rallied from 4-1 down in the final set to beat sixthseede­d Holger Rune 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 in the Monte Carlo Masters final for the first Masters title of his career.
