Sixth horse dies at Belmont Park

The cloud that has hung over horse racing since just before the Kentucky Derby continued when a horse was euthanized after falling in the first race at Belmont Park. It is the sixth fatality since May 4 conducted during racing or training at the Elmont, N.Y., track. It was also the second in two days, with a horse dying in the last race after Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.

Mashnee Girl fell near the quarter pole entering the stretch in an allowance race for fillies and mares Sunday. The horse was euthanized on the track. The likely cause of the fall was a fracture in one or both legs.

Excursionn­iste, who was euthanized Saturday, and Mashnee Girl both were trained by Mark Hennig.

In WNBA play, Natasha Cloud scored 19 points, and the visiting Washington Mystics nearly blew a 28point lead before holding on to defeat the Seattle Storm 71-65. The Storm retired Sue Bird’s No. 10 jersey . ... Brittney Griner scored 29 points, and Phoenix beat host Indiana 85-82. One day after Griner was confronted by a “provocateu­r” at DallasFort Worth Internatio­nal Airport, Mercury coach Vanessa Nygaard suggested more charter flights could help prevent future run-ins.

Oral Roberts beat Oregon 11-6 to win the Eugene Super Regional in three games and advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. Meanwhile, Brock Wilken hit three of Wake Forest’s record-tying nine home runs, and the Demon Deacons, the No. 1 national seed, routed Alabama 22-5 to win the WinstonSal­em Super Regional in two games.

Oral Roberts and Wake Forest will be joined in the CWS field by No. 2 Florida, No. 5 Louisiana State, No. 7 Virginia and Texas Christian. Stanford beat Texas 8-3 to force a Game 3 of their super regional on Monday, and Tennessee will play at Southern Mississipp­i in Game 3 of their series.

Uruguay beat Italy 1-0 in La Plata, Argentina, to win its first Under-20 World Cup soccer title. Luciano Rodríguez scored the winning, 86th-minute goal on a header from close range.

Andy Murray, 36, became the oldest grass-court champion at an ATP Challenger Tour event, beating Austrian Jurij Rodionov 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the Lexus Surbiton Trophy in London to earn a seeded position at Wimbledon next month.
