Coliseum to host Division 1 final

- staff and wire reports — Eric Sondheimer

The Southern Section reached an agreement to hold its Division 1 football championship game at the Coliseum on Nov. 24 at 7 p.m.

Last year St. John Bosco and Mater Dei played in the Division 1 final at the Rose Bowl. Those two are favored again to reach the final.

It’s the first time in 26 years the Coliseum has hosted a Southern Section final. The Coliseum also will host the Dorsey-King/Drew regular-season finale Oct. 27 with a halftime concert.

High school soccer officials have a pay dispute with the Southern Section that could disrupt the season.

Most soccer official units are unlikely to assign Southern Section games, so schools will have to recruit their own officials but not pay more than the official Southern Section pay structure. Officials gladly will work City Section games because they were given a raise last year.

New Southern Section commissioner Mike West suggested that assistant coaches may need to officiate games.
