Mother's Day marked the 33rd year of Courageous Kids Day, an event that provides “a day away from cancer” each year to hundreds of young cancer patients and their families at California's Great America. Founder Gay Crawford said, “It's more than a play day; it provides emotional escape from the everyday trials of cancer. It's a day when these patients can just be kids, their brothers and sisters can enjoy time with their siblings outside of a hospital room, and parents can watch their kids have fun without worry.”

A big hit were the red capes with the words “Super Hero” emblazoned on the back, given to all the courageous kids. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the event relies on many Los Gatos and Saratoga volunteers like Bob Steinfeld, Heather Duffy, Nick

Shain and Clareen Dunivin, who donated a quilt for a free drawing to a courageous family. Hats off to this year's event chairs, Donna Adam and Pam Dunnett.

The Butter Paddle will showcase Annie Morhauser of Annieglass, on Saturday, June 4, noon-4 p.m. Morhauser is a master glassmaker, evidenced by her work on display at the Smithsonian. Complimentary engraving will be offered on purchases made May1june 4, and buyers will be entered to win one of her “sweetheart” bowls. The Butter Paddle is the fundraising arm of Uplift Family Services (formerly EMQ) and has been run by dedicated volunteers since 1967. www.butterpaddle.com
