Propositio­n 113 is not good for Colorado

Colorado voters are being asked whether to approve joining the National Popular Vote Compact this November. A yes vote on Propositio­n 113 would force Colorado to award its nine Electoral College votes to the candidate who wins the most votes nationally, even if that candidates loses in Colorado or, worse yet, does not even appear on our ballot.

Coloradans should vote no on Propositio­n 113. Colorado’s Electoral College votes should go to the candidate who wins the most votes in Colorado. The Electoral College system guarantees that presidenti­al candidates must pay attention to Colorado, if they want a chance at winning our nine electoral votes. That means attention to our concerns and issues: water policy, transporta­tion funding, health care funding, etc. All that changes if National Popular Vote goes into effect. With just 1.8% of the nation’s population, Colorado can be easily overlooked by candidates in favor of vote-rich states and cities, like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston. Candidates go where the votes are, and Colorado just does not have enough votes to attract attention.
