Consider becoming an organ, eye or tissue donor

-

You never truly know how much you appreciate the little things in life until they’re taken away. In 2016, I had just returned from vacation, and for the three weeks following, simply could not seem to catch my breath. Walking to the kitchen from the bedroom without stopping for breath had become impossible. Soon after, I was admitted to the hospital where it was discovered that I needed an immediate heart transplant.

In August 2016, I received my new heart, and the gift of renewed life thanks to my donor. Now, I’m happy and healthy, and enjoying camping trips with our beautiful family. I’m forever grateful to my amazing donor and their family for giving me the gift of life and the ability to enjoy my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Right now, in our region, there are almost 2,000 people waiting on a lifesaving transplant just like I was. April is National Donate Life Month, and I’m inviting my Loveland community to join me in raising awareness for organ, eye and tissue donation.

I’m sharing my stor y this month to encourage Colorado residents to consider signing up to become an organ, eye and tissue donor, but also so other recipients and those in our community waiting on a transplant know that they have the support of a community. Ever yone can register, right now. Donatelifecolorado.org is a great resource with the facts you need to make an informed decision about donation and to sign up to become a donor online.
