The Bible’s law is love

-

When it comes to interpreting the Bible, there are many ways to do so faithfully, some arguably better or more faithful. In response to some recent editorials, yes, the Bible is relevant. The Bible can inspire our choices, and I would say faithful inspiration always guides us toward love of God and love of neighbor.

Apparently some people are upset with the Respect for Marriage Act. This is a beautiful move to support morality and humanity. When a couple chooses to dedicate their lives to one another, our nation confers certain rights and privileges to those who do so through marriage. This is a civil right that all people now have access to, if they so choose.

Jesus says, “You have heard it said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Matthew 5:43-44. Jesus is clear that while the law is important, it must be read through the lens of love. As new information comes about, the law can be changed to accommodate new situations and differing cultures. (Read the Torah closely, you will see this happening.)

In a civic setting it is most just to offer legal protection to all forms of marriage. It is the job of elected officials to vote for what they think is best for the common welfare of all people. To me, any legislation no matter how imperfect that supports justice, kindness and the welfare of the most vulnerable is a step in the right direction.

I encourage you to write to your representatives and let them know your ideas for creating a kinder and more just society. And for those who pray, pray for your representatives, both those you agree with and those you don’t.
