Commission begins preparing for upcoming school board elections

- By Gerren Smith Staff Writer

After conducting a successful November 3, 2020 General Election for Hot Spring County, the election staff met Tuesday at the Election Office building during a brief HSC Commissioners meeting to discuss plans for the upcoming school board elections.

School board elections will be held in May and November.

No decisions were made about the process for the school board elections, but the election staff met to make early plans and preparations.

The previous school board election was during the March 3, 2020 Primary election. A runoff was also needed for Glen Rose School Board Position which was held March 31, 2020 at the election office building. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were a limited number of poll workers (two to three) and they wore gloves to help prevent any issues for public safety. The HSC Election office provided hand sanitizer and a minimum of 70 percent of alcohol disinfectant spray and Lysol materials to clean all areas in the building.

The election staff also took the same safety precaution and procedural guidelines during the special Rockport election in September 2020 and the general election in November 2020. The election staff was able to have the special Rockport election at the election office building last year.

But due to the amount of people expected to participate in the November 3, 2020 general election, the election staff decided to have registered voters cast their ballots at the Hot Spring County Fairgrounds. To follow proper and safety guidelines to protect everyone's well being due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the election staff ensured disinfectant supplies of hand sanitizer and a minimum of 70 percent of alcohol disinfectant spray and other materials available at all vote centers during early voting and on Election Day. Also there were markers placed on the floor and dividers setup to keep voters six feet apart for social distancing.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines sent by the Secretary of State's office, only a limited number of locations for vote centers were allowed during the Nov. 3, 2020 general election.

Registered voters can check their voter registration status online at the website Arkansas Voter View at www.voterview. ar-nova.org. Also registered voters may call to check their status to make sure they’re still active to vote at the election office county clerk’s office.

The election staff plans to meet again in the next upcoming months prior to the first school board election in May.

For any further questions, please contact county clerk Sandy Boyette or staff at (501) 322-2291 or Liz Pfeiffer, Duty of Elections at the election office at (501) 229-1666.
