Beavers down Curley Wolves, 42-41, in district tournament finals

As the two seed out of the 3A-7 conference, the Glen Rose Beavers had to travel to the one seeded Prescott Curley Wolves for the district tournament finals Saturday.

The road trip didn’t affect the Beavers as they pulled out a one-point win over the Curley Wolves to become the 3A-7 District Tournament Champions. The Beavers were able to outscore the Curley Wolves, 21-20, in the second half to get the 4241 win. The two squads had been tied at halftime after each scored 21 points in the first half.

The Beavers now head to the 3A Region 4 Tournament as the one seed out of the 3A-7 conference. The Beavers will face the Smackover Buckaroos, the four seed out of the 3A-8 conference, on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The 3A Region 4 Tournament is being hosted at Prescott.

To get to the district tournament finals, the Beavers had to get past the sixth seeded Ashdown Panthers in the semifinals hosted at Glen Rose. The Beavers, led by senior Ahmad Holmes, dominated the Panthers in a 40-26 win to advance to the tournament finals.

Despite a slow start, going down 4-0 to the Panthers, the Beavers rallied to outscore the Panthers 12-1 for the rest of the quarter. The Beavers gained momentum in the second quarter and held the Panthers to just five points. The Beavers added another 12 points in the second to go into halftime with a 24-10 lead. The Beavers maintained a double digit lead over the Panthers in the second half as the Beavers added eight points in both the third and fourth quarters. The Beavers also held the Panthers to seven points in the third and nine points in the fourth.

For the Beavers, Holmes led in scoring with 16 points. Behind him was Ethan Taylor with eight points, from two made 3-pointers and two free throws. Four Beaver players ended the night with four points; Cohen Carter, Brayden Youngman, Andrew Weatherfor­d, and Andrew Fletcher each had four points.

For the Panthers, Peyton Williams led in scoring with 12 points. He was followed by Kaiden Winfrey with six points and Shamar Easter with four points. Also scoring for the Panthers were Ashton Taylor, two points, and Toddrick Matthews and Braylan Milsak each with one point.

Before taking on the Beavers, the Panthers had defeated Genoa Central, 57-48, in round one and Haskell Harmony Grove, 43-40, in round two to advance to the semifinals. Being the two seed the Beavers had a double-bye in the district tournament.
