MHS graduate sworn in as attorney

Rodrick McGill was born and raised in Malvern. Graduating in 2008 from Malvern High School, he knew he wanted to do something special.

While he majored in economics at Grambling University, it wasn’t until after he completed his undergraduate studies that he knew what he wanted to do.

“A conversation with my best friend sparked my interest in law,” McGill said.

His newfound interest brought him all the way to Washington D. C. McGill ended up graduating from the University of D. C. with cum laude honors.

McGill found himself employed at the Department of Defense.

While his exploits around the nation have taken him away from Malvern, he still likes to come back and give his hometown its fair due. He visited last month and was sworn in as attorney of law by the Honorable Circuit Judge Stephen Shirron.

“Basically you can be sworn in by anyone that’s eligible,” McGill said. “You only have to be barred in one state to practice.”

McGill tries to visit his home in Malvern “three or four times a year.” He still resides in Washington D. C. Now that he is a sworn attorney, he will soon begin work with the Department of Defense’s Office of General Counsel.

While his work has encountered a few setbacks because of the COVID- 19 pandemic, his offices were mostly prepared for the new way of work.

“I’ve been working in the office doing things of different capacity,” McGill said. “It was kind of a smooth transition because we had already implemented telework.”

Malvern certainly feels the absence of such a talented young man, but he’s serving his government with skill and dignity. He might not be working too hard today, however, as today McGill celebrates his birthday.
