Humbleness

-

The only person more foolish than the guy who acts like he knows it all is the person who argues with him.

“Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself.” Proverbs 26:4

I’ve had a busy life. I’ve done a lot of things, been a part of some awesome stuff and have picked up bits and pieces of information from just about every walk of life you can imagine.

I am a professional Jack of all trades and a confirmed master of none.

But, I know just enough about stuff to be dangerous. Or worse yet, to argue about it. I think being a Daddy is partly to blame. Because! Kids ask the silliest questions. And, as a Daddy you have to know the answers. Or at least be able to tell a convincing enough story to make them think you do.

For example. One of my boys, while we were driving down the road, asked me why the sky was so blue. (They ranged in ages of 4 to 8 years old then.) So, I started in on a long explanation about how the atmosphere is composed of certain elements like oxygen, nitrogen and other elements.

When light from the sun hits the atmosphere these elements absorb the blue part of the light wave and then reflects it all around. That’s why our sky is blue.

All the boys were on the edge of their seats listening to my overly pompous and long explanation.

When one of them then said, “Nuh-uh.”

Well! I’ve gotta keep my Daddy bluff in on them so I started launching in on an explanation that one day when they study science they’ll see that certain elements give off a particular color spectrum and because our atmosphere is composed mostly of nitrogen then. . . . . . .

My boy again said, “Nuh-uh.”

So I said, “Ok, Mr. Smarty pants. Why do you think the sky is blue?”

In a very serious tone of voice he said, “Because.”

“Because why?” I shot back.

He smiled and said, “Because there’s no clouds, Silly.” Huh. Can’t argue with that.

We drove on a little further when one of them asked, “Daddy, why are the clouds white?” I humbly said, “That’s a Mommy question.”

Let us pray.

Gracious Lord, today, help us to realize our limitations in life and humbly serve you in all that we do. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
