Malvern educator dies in accident

A longtime Malvern band director died during a vehicle crash Tuesday on Interstate 30. The accident took place at 6:10 p.m. near mile marker 86 in rural Hot Spring County, according to an Arkansas State Police accident report.

Ken Williams, of Malvern, was killed during the crash and Michael Smith, 64, of Arkadelphi­a was injured, according to the report.

Many have taken to social media to express their sorrows and share kind words about Williams.

According to a statement issued by the Malvern School District, “Mr. Williams was dedicated and passionate about band and seeing his students succeed both musically and in life. Our condolence­s are with the Williams family and we ask that you keep the Williams family, district coworkers and all of Mr. Williams current and former students in your thoughts.”

The Arkansas Marching Arts Associatio­n issued a statement calling Williams “one of our family members.”

“Ken loved his band kids fiercely, and we are so proud to have known and worked with him,” according to the statement.

Williams had worked as a music educator for more than 30 years.
