Prescription Drug Take Back Day Saturday

- By Lance Brownfield

DEA’S National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday and the Malvern Police Department and other law enforcement agencies will be hosting a drug take back event outside Walmart from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is part of an effort to get expired and unneeded prescription drugs out of the medicine cabinet so that they can be properly disposed of and avoid misuse.

“The drug overdose epidemic in the United States is a clear and present public health, public safety, and national security threat,” according to the DEA website. “DEA’S National Prescription Drug Take Back Day reflects DEA’S commitment to Americans’ safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting.”

The event is hosted twice a year. Once in spring and once in fall. If individuals are unable to make it to either of these dates, there is a prescription drug dropbox in the Malvern Police Department located at 215 E. Highland Ave. The box can be accessed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
