HSC Sheriff's Office

- Staff Writer By Virginia Pitts

The history of the Hot Spring County Sheriff’s Office goes all the way back to 1829, when the county was formed by the Territorial Legislature and G. B. Hughes served as the county’s very first Sheriff. The long line of succession currently stands with Sheriff Mike Cash in the head seat and Richard Tolleson serving as Chief Deputy.

The HSC Sheriff’s Office diligently serves the entire province with a small but committed force, who work tirelessly to bring order and safety to the far corners of the county. Their headquarters is in the old annex building at 215 E. Highland Ave. in Malvern, site of the former Malvern Hospital built after World War II. Offenders are held at the HSC Detention Center, which was built much more recently, within the last 15 years.

The HSC deputies patrol the area and answer emergency calls. The force also employs detectives who oversee criminal investigations. The Sheriff’s Office works in cooperation with other law enforcement and municipal entities to pursue the common goals of safety, justice and care for the community.

The Sheriff’s Office wants the public to trust in their ability and their concern for the job, as the department is here to serve the public, first and foremost. One of the more recent hires is Deputy Codi Hood, who serves as school resource officer for the Bismarck School District.

Hood grew up in Bismarck, graduated from homeschool in 2004 and later served in law enforcement for about a year and a half before joining the HSC Sheriff’s Office.

Hood is thrilled to be back at home to protect and serve the Bismarck community, and the kids and faculty at Bismarck Elementary have quickly embraced him as one of their own.
