Lebron James breaks NBA’S All-time Scoring Record, surpassing the Great Kareem Abdul-jabbar on February 7, 2023 for an all-time historic accomplishment held by two All-time Greats of the Game

On February 7, Lebron Raymone James Sr. James scored his 38,388th career point in a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, surpassing Kareem Abdul-jabbar to become the all-time leading scorer in NBA history. Abdul-jabbar had held the record since April 5, 1984. After James broke the record, the NBA stopped the game for an on-court ceremony where Abdul-jabbar and James embraced.. Nicknamed “King James”, he is widely considered to be one of the greatest players in history and is often compared to Michael Jordan in debates over the greatest basketball player of all time. [a] James has won four NBA championships, four NBA MVP awards, four NBA Finals MVP awards, three All-star MVP awards, and two Olympic gold medals. James has scored the most career points in both the regular season and playoffs, has the fourthmost career assists, and the tenth-most career steals. He has been named an NBA All-star a record- tying 19 times, and selected to the ALL-NBA Team a record 18 times, [b] and to the NBA All-defensive First Team five times.[3] He has competed in 10 NBA Finals, the third most all time, including eight consecutively between 2011 and 2018.[4] In 2021, James was selected to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team,[5] and in 2022 became the first and only player in NBA history to accumulate over 10,000 career points, rebounds, and assists. Abdul-jabbar — a longtime Laker and one of many celebrities and sports stars who made sure they were there to see history — became the league’s all-time leading scorer on April 5, 1984 and wound up retiring in 1989 with 38,387 points. It was a record that some thought would last forever, with very few even coming close. Karl Malone retired 1,459 points behind Abdul-jabbar, Kobe Bryant was 4,744 points shy, and Michael Jordan was 6,095 points away. “A record that has stood for nearly 40 years, which many people thought would never be broken,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said.
