Lady Beavers take No. 4 seed for state, fall to Genoa Central, Fouke in postseason play at regionals

Lady Beaver trio Riggan, Melhorn and Callison knock out home runs

GENOA — The Glen Rose Lady Beavers claim the No. 4 seed heading into this week’s Class 3A State Softball Tournament in Lincoln. The Lady Beavers finished the 3A-4 Regional Softball Tournament winning their state qualifying game against Smackover 14-2— advancing to the semifinal round but fell short to Genoa Central 4-2. The Lady Beavers had a tough bout against Fouke in the third place game, and unfortunat­ely Glen Rose suffered a 9-5 loss.

The Lady Beavers sparked by several players igniting several key plays on the diamond throughout the regional tournament. Zavery May led the offensive execution for Glen Rose in the team’s 12-run victory against Smackover.

May went 4-for-4 and was perfect at the plate with two standup doubles and scored four runs. Maddie Melhorn went 3-for-4 at the plate and had a standup triple and scored four runs.

The core of Maci Carver, Kaylee Ellis, Emma Wright and Sydney Riggan all went 2-for-4 at the dish.

Riggan and Carver along with Avery Fikes each had a double to spark the offense in the frame. Madi Callison and Lilly Goss each powered a hit apiece.

Wright earned the victory in the circle and struck out two batters while pitching five sizzling innings for the Lady Beavers.

In the semifinal round, the Lady Beavers hung tough despite taking the two-run loss to Genoa Central 4-2.

Melhorn and Riggan stepped up to ignite home runs for key hits in the frame. Wright collected a hit to contribute to the offensive execution for the Lady Beavers.

Wright pitched three and two-thirds innings and struck out one batter—riggan provided some heat in the circle and pitched two and one-thirds innings and struck out one batter to propel the defense.

The Lady Beavers displayed even more key sparks on the diamond in their final matchup in the tournament, falling to Fouke in the third place game. Melhorn and Callison each knocked out home runs to power the Lady Beavers’ offense. Melhorn went perfect at the dish— going 3-for-3 to record two home runs.

Fikes followed with two hits and a double to score a run with Callison. Wright had a double and Ellis finished the outing with a hit.

In the circle, Wright pitched three and twothirds innings and struck out one batter—while Riggan pitched two and one-thirds innings and struck out one batter.

Now with a whole new season awaiting the Lady Beavers this week, they’re ready to show that spark on the diamond in Lincoln.

The Lady Beavers may be the No. 4 seed, but are up for the task to knock off No. 1 seed Lincoln in the opening round at state—aiming to capture the ultimate prize in their quest of capturing the 3A state title.

Glen Rose softball head coach Monty Whitley has guided the Lady Beavers through a challengin­g journey on the diamond as postseason contenders.

Whitley aims to keep the Lady Beavers motivated as they make their arrival in Lincoln ready to make some noise in the 3A state tournament.
