Indians top England for second consecutiv­e victory behind stellar defense on the road

ENGLAND — The Poyen Indians ignited their second consecutiv­e victory on the diamond Thursday and defeated England 9-1 in a seventh inning contest for a non-conference match-up in England.

The Indians’ defense continues to stay intact while containing the Lions offense to one run scored in the bottom of the first inning. From that point, the Indians held England scoreless in the second through the seventh inning. England managed one run on six hits with four errors.

The Tribe collected nine runs on five hits. Defensivel­y, Ryan Ray earned the win on the mound while bringing the heat in four innings of work. Ray gave up five hits and one run and struck out five batters and threw 40 strikes across the plate. Hayden Murray blazed up on the mound for three innings and allowed one hit, no runs and struck out seven batters and threw 29 strikes.

Offensivel­y, Kullen Conner and Murray led the offense in the batter’s box and both collected two hits apiece. Conner drove in a run for an RBI and scored a run. Murray powered a double and drove in a run for an RBI. Hunter Woods recorded a double and drove in a run for an RBI and scored two runs.

Allen Fite with Woods led the scoring attack and scored two runs, Ray, Trenton Russell and Logan Lewis each scored a run. Conner led the base running with two stolen bases and Ray sparked on the base paths with one stolen base.

The Tribe routed three runs in the top of the first, then scored four in the fifth and two in the sixth inning to secure their eight-run victory for backto-back wins.

UP NEXT

This weekend, the Tribe returns home to host their annual Indian Baseball Classic at the Poyen Sports Complex.

The Indian Classic begins today with Poyen set to hit the diamond for the final game against Fordyce in game four of the tournament. Area rival teams, Glen Rose, Magnet Cove and Bismarck also will be in action this weekend. The Classic is scheduled March 2-9.
