Raiders blow win vs. Miami in final seconds

Dolphins strike late for game-winning FG

- By Jerry McDonald

Jason Sanders kicked a 44yard field goal with one second to play as the Miami Dolphins beat the Las Vegas Raiders 2625 Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium.

Taking over with 19 seconds to play, Miami got a 44-yard completion from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Mack Hollins, coupled with a roughing the passer penalty on Arden Key, to get in to position for the game-winning points.

Moments earlier, Daniel Carlson had kicked a 22-yard field goal to give the Raiders an apparent victory.

Trailing 23-22 because of a missed Carlson extra point, Nelson Agholor, who earlier had scored on an 85-yard pass from Derek Carr, drew a 49-yard pass interference flag on Miami’s Byron Jones.

The Raiders, struggling for much of the night to score, got a sudden 85-yard touchdown catch-and-run to Agholor from Derek Carr to go up 22-17 with 3:37 to play.

Incredibly, Carlson missed the extra point wide right, which would come back to hurt the Raiders in a big way when Myles Gaskin took a short pass and turned it in to a 59-yard touchdown pass from Fitzpatrick.

With the Dolphins offense struggling under Tua Tagovaiola, Fitzpatrick emerged and immediately led the Dolphins on an 84-yard, 13-play drive that tied the score 16-16 with 4:01 to

play.

Fitzpatrick completed 5 of 8 passes for 73 yards, with the last two incompletions forcing a 22-yard Jason Sanders field goal to tie the score.

The Raiders scored on a 1-yard run by Carr and field goals of 23, 38 and 20 yards by Carlson as third down was a mystery all night. Agholor’s touchdown put the Raiders up in the fourth quarter before Carlson’s game-winner.

Miami had field goals of 37, 39 and 22 by Sanders to go along with a 10yard pass from Tagovaiola to Myles Gaskin and Fitzpatrick’s 59-yard scoring pass to Gaskin.

The Raiders are 7-8 going in to their finale at Denver, while Miami is 10- 5 and a game away from a playoff berth.

GASKIN STRIKES BACK » The Dolphins responded by to Agholor’s big play with a 59yard touchdown pass from Fitzpatrick to Myles Gaskin, with Jason Sanders converting the extra point for a 2322 Miami lea with 2:55 to play.

AGHOLOR LIGHTNING, CARLSON’S MISS » After Miami had tied the score at 16, Carr bided his time, rolled to his right and found Agholor deep down the right sideline for a 85-yard catch and run for a 23-16 lead with 3:37 to play.

The play came against Miami corner Byron Jones, whom the Raiders pursued unsuccessfully in free agency.

It came one play after holding call on rookie John Simpson, who was playing in place of the injured Denzelle Good.

Carlson was wide right with the extra point, which would come back to haunt the Raiders.

FITZPATRICK PROVIDES SPARK » With the Dolphins offense struggling under Tua Tagovaiola, Fitzpatrick emerged and immediately led the Dolphins on an 84yard, 13-play drive that tied the score 16-16 with 4:01 to play.

Fitzpatrick completed 5 of 8 passes for 73 yards.
