Tam boys stay unbeaten with late goal against Drake

Schuyler Hoebericht­s scored in stoppage time as the Tam High boys soccer team survived a battle against Drake, pulling out a 1-0 win on Wednesday.

Kaveh Fafaie provided the assist on Tam’s goal. Drake almost salvaged a point but hit the post in the final minute of regulation.

“I can’t say enough about the Drake team,” Tam coach Dustin Nygaard said. “They came in extremely well organized and played exceptiona­l soccer.”

Drake coach Rene Ayala also called it one of the best games he’d been a part of in some time. Earlier in the game, Drake missed a couple of golden opportunit­ies — one a penalty kick and another a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.

Tam (4-0-0) remained unbeaten this season and is set to travel to unbeaten Redwood next Wednesday.

• Terra Linda scored twice in the final 10 minutes to pull out a 3-1 victory against Branson on Wednesday. Elvin Maldonado, Jason Hsu and Roan Goertz found the back of the net for TL.

Girls soccer

Julia Chow assisted on both goals as Branson put the game away late in a 2-0 win against Terra Linda. Chow set up Caitlin Evers in the 31st minute for a 1-0 halftime lead. The game remained in the balance until the 73rd minute, when Chow set up Avery Hansen to double Branson’s advantage.

• Zoe Shepherd scored the only goal of the game as Marin Catholic edged San Rafael, 1-0. Olivia Korich assisted on Shepherd’s goal.

• Tam remained unbeaten following a 3-1 win against Drake. Elisa Shott scored for the Pirates.

• San Marin posted a 7-0 win against Novato. No further details were available.

Girls volleyball

Ella Heimbrodt had 18 kills and Lindsey Jones added 10 kills as Drake rallied from a two-set hole to post a 19-25, 26-28, 25-20, 25-22, 16-14 victory against Tam. Olivia Dow added 22 assists, three kills and three aces.

• Branson and Terra Linda battled through five sets with the Bulls pulling out a 23-25, 16-25, 23-25, 2523, 15-10 victory.

• Tenley Brovelli had 22 assists and three aces as San Rafael topped Marin Catholic, 25-21, 25-18, 25-22. Mary Healy added 13 kills and Hannah Knudsen had six kills and six aces.

Prep softball

Redwood improved to 12-0 on the season with a 10-0 win over Drake in six innings on Wednesday. Sadie Leonard got the start and win, striking out eight in three innings with three hits allowed.

Georgia Pineda struck out seven and allowed one hit over the final three innings in relief. Morgan Bello went 3 for 4 with a home run, double and three RBIs while Maddie Sofnas also collected three hits including a double and drove in a pair.

• Lucy Mogan hit her fifth home run of the season and Maddy Penick drove in five runs to lead San Marin to a 14-4 win over Novato in six innings on Tuesday. Mogan and Penick each went 3 for 3 with the former collecting a single and a double and latter raking two doubles and a triple. Micayla Fong had three hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Mustangs, who also got five strikeouts in a completega­me outing from starter Ashely Casper. Bella Harding hit a three-run home run to lead the Hornets.

Boys water polo

Tam has roared out to a 6-0 start to the year with its 15-14 win over Redwood on Tuesday. Goalie Nikita Valajev was one of the stars, making some impressive saves including a five-meter shot on goal. Max Pollack led the Hawks in scoring with six goals while Jackson Attinger and Willem Palmer each scored three. Among their wins, the Red-tailed Hawks have also defeated Las Lomas, 16-8, and De La Salle, 18-17, in a triple-overtime thriller.

Boys golf

Ryan Herbst shot a 37 to lead Branson to a 202220 win over Terra Linda at StoneTree Golf Club on Tuesday. Sean Madden shot a 38 to lead Terra Linda.

Girls basketball

Marin Catholic led wireto-wire in a 57-37 win over Redwood on Tuesday. Alexa Greenwood paced the Wildcats with 15 points while Gracyn Lovette had 13, Sadie Blue Starret had eight and freshmen Cecily Hadd and Maddie Dayton added 7 and 6, respective­ly.

Redwood was paced by Stella Neuschul with 16 points and two rebounds and Brianna Ortiz’s seven points and six rebounds

“Extremely proud of the girls and how they fought in the second half,” said Redwood head coach Diane Peterson. “It’s a tenacity we will continue to build on for the remainder of this season. We are all just happy to be back out on the court again.”

• Branson took care of San Rafael 47-21 on Tuesday behind 12 points from Jaliyah Wiggins. Hannah Golan, Georgia Oliver and Isabella Arauz-Moore each chipped in six points for the Bulls. Ambelia Rodas scored 10 to lead the Bulldogs.

Boys basketball

Marin Catholic picked up a hard-fought 53-48 win over Redwood on Tuesday. Lucq Anderson scored only six points but grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds (six offensive) to go with two assists and two steals. Kyle Winters led the Wildcats in scoring with 16 points and grabbed five rebounds while AJ Rohosy chipped in 15 points and nine rebounds and Nick Greenwood added nine points, five rebounds and four steals. Ains Fish paced Redwood with 14 points while Charlie Treene added 11.

• Will Heimbrodt scored 20 or more points for the third consecutiv­e game, netting 21 to lead Drake to a second straight win against San Marin 53-46 on Tuesday. Casey Borgonovo scored 11 for the Pirates and Jack Wuthnow added 10. Tyson Geraci paced the Mustangs with 20 points.

Boys tennis

Drake’s Jake Magnusson picked up a 6-1, 7-6 (4) victory at No.1 singles against Carson Harrell but Tam swept the other six matches to take the 6-1 victory on Tuesday. The Red-tailed Hawks got singles wins from Tyler Byrne, Emmet McEvilley and Andy Park.

• Nickawn Namdar picked up the decisive victory, winning at No. 1 singles to lead Marin Catholic, 4-3, against Terra Linda on Tuesday.

Luca Ratra had a win at No. 4 singles for TL while Quinn Birkenseer and Luka Klima won at No. 2 doubles.

Men’s golf

Dominican senior Matt Fry was named to the AllPac West Second-Team on Tuesday. Fry had two topfive finishes for the Penguins this spring and never finished outside the top-20 in any tournament. He’ll be closing his 2021 campaign at the NCAA Division II Super Regionals at the end of this week. The tournament starts Thursday at The Home Course in Dupont, Washington.
