Chase helps US to 7th place in rowing

Former Mill Valley resident Kendall Chase and Team USA won the Final B of the Women’s Four rowing event on Tuesday, securing a 7th-place finish for the U.S.

Team USA pulled into the lead midway through the 2000-meter race and went on to finish in 6 minutes, 33.65 seconds. Denmark finished second in 6:34.72.

Team USA was knocked out of medal contention after finishing fifth in qualifying heats over the weekend.

• With the conclusion of rowing and mountain biking, two of the four Olympians with Marin ties remain in the hunt for medals. Dylan Woodhead, a 2016 Drake High grad, and the U.S. men’s water polo team are set to continue group play on Thursday at 10 p.m. against Italy. The U.S. is currently 2-0 in group play and is coming off a 20-3 win over South Africa. Joe Ryan, a 2014 Drake grad, and the U.S. baseball team will open group play against Israel at 3 a.m. on Friday.

College football

San Jose State offensive lineman Jack Snyder, a former Marin Catholic standout, was one of 80 players selected to the Outland Trophy Award watchlist unveiled on Tuesday by the Football Writers Associatio­n of America.

The Outland Trophy is awarded annually to the most outstandin­g interior in college football. Snyder is the first Spartan named to the watchlist in over 20 years.

Snyder is entering his sixth season at San Jose and is coming off a career year that saw him earn First-Team All-Mountain West honors. He was also named the Mountain West Player of the Year by Pro Football Focus.
