Marin Briefs: Archie Williams boys, Tam’s Carney lead way at Lowell Invitation­al,

The Archie Williams High boys cross country team took second place in Heat 1 of the varsity boys race at the Lowell Invitation­al at Golden Gate Park on Saturday.

Tam’s Caden Carney also had a big day, finishing second in that same race with a time of 14 minutes, 22 seconds — leading all MCAL runners on the 2.9-mile course and helping Tam place fourth.

Eric Overaa led the way for the Peregrine Falcons, finishing fifth in 14:35. Nate Wolford and Jonah Grubbs also finished inside the top 20 for Archie Williams.

Tam also placed well on the girls side, finishing fourth out of 20 teams. Brianna McInnis came in seventh in 17:00.5, one spot ahead of San Domenico’s Hayley Ballard (17:02.5).

Tam’s Emma Dunmire, fresh off a first-place time at the Stinson Beach Relays, placed 21st.

Branson’s Adeline Johnson placed seventh in Heat 1 of the varsity girls competitio­n, finishing in 17:43.2.

Girls volleyball

Branson maintained its perfect start to the season, running through the entire Sonoma Valley tournament in straight sets on Saturday to claim the title.

Setter Logan Tusher and libero Gia Fisher were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts.

The Bulls (9-0) won all five of their matches, picking up wins against Liberty, Richmond and Vintage in pool play. Branson took down Cardinal Newman in the semifinals then eliminated Foothill to win the title.

A handful of other Marin teams crossed paths with each other at the Sonoma Valley tournament. Redwood went 3-0 in pool play before bowing out to Cardinal Newman. The Giants defeated Marin Academy, Rodriguez and Windsor along the way.

MA lost to Windsor and defeated Rodriguez in pool play but defeated San Rafael, Liberty and Sonoma Valley to finish 11th.

San Rafael finished 1-3 on the day but Mary Healy was named to the all-tournament team.

• Grace Oliva had a team-high 12 kills and Marin Catholic got key contributi­ons from several juniors in a 25-22, 25-17, 25-12 win against St. Ignatius on Friday. “I’m unbelievab­ly proud of the kids and how they battled,” MC coach Jake Spain said. “SI played us super well, controlled the ball and put pressure on us. We held on strong through our inconsiste­nt early play. We got massive contributi­ons from our junior class. Tehani Ulufatu had a pair of crucial aces to help MC close out a tight first set. Emily Greene stepped up with nine kills. Izzy Do Arellanes and Brooke Brilliant also came up with several big plays.

• Branson picked up a four-set win against Marin Academy on Friday, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-13. Kate Lane and Grace Badlam paced MA with 13 kills apiece. Gabby Grujic had 36 assists, 12 digs and five kills for the Wildcats.

• Ruby Kuerschner piled up 41 assists as Terra Linda rallied out of an early hole for a 20-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-11 win against El Cerrito on Friday. Audrey Nelson (17 kills) and Olivia Quinby (14 kills) paced the Trojans’ attack. Bella Manes had 27 digs.

• Setter Olivia Dow had a strong all-around game with 21 assists, 11 digs, five kills and four aces to lead Archie Williams to a 25-16, 2518, 25-12 win against Northgate on Friday. Elsa Snipes had a team-high 14 kills for the Peregrine Falcons. Outside hitter Ella Heimbrodt added 10 kills and 11 digs. Junior Lauren Barnwell led the defense with 14 digs.

Women’s volleyball

Dominican dropped its third match at the Gator/ Seawolf Classic, falling 2516, 25-11, 25-9 against Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday. The Penguins were set to finish play at the tournament late Saturday night against San Francisco State.

Girls tennis

Pia Ong Bamola and Lindsay Reed were victorious in the most competitiv­e match of the day, edging out Sofia Guerra and Carly Knopf, 6-7, 6-4, 10-7 at No. 1 doubles as Redwood defeated Marin Catholic 7-0. Jordan Marotto won at No .1 singles against Elise Hohenriede­r, 6-2, 6-2.

• Larkin Petersen, Annabelle Haloran and Hannah Perlana picked up wins at Nos. 2-4 singles, respective­ly to lead Tam to a 6-1 win against Terra Linda. En-Ya Zhang picked up the lone win for TL, outlasting Gabriella Plonowski, 7-5, 1-6, 10-5, at No. 1 singles.

Men’s tennis

Recently retired Marin Academy coach Geoff Martinez advanced to the semifinals of the USTA National 65 Grass Court Championsh­ips following a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory in the quarterfin­als on Saturday.

Hall of Fame

The Redwood High School Athletic Hall of Fame is seeking nomination­s for athletes, coaches, special recognitio­n and team categories for future classes.

Athletes must have graduated in 2007 or before and participat­ed in any sports activity while at Redwood. Deadline for submitting nomination­s is Oct. 1.
