Proposed system for rooftop solar not right fit
I’m looking at the California Public Utilities Commision’s proposal to impose a monthly fee (aka tax) on the ownership of solar panels (“California proposes reducing incentives for rooftop solar,” Dec. 14).
This seems to be developed as a way to make the cost of maintaining the electric distribution system more equitable. The concept is that, by producing their own power, homeowners are not paying their fair share of the electric distribution system costs.
How does a new pay distribution system look? The old system pays based upon electricity usage. Clearly that is not giving the utilities enough money. Should electricity distribution be a state-funded infrastructure service paid for out of the general fund? Or should we continue on this path and charge consumers for conservation efforts as well?
A monthly fee to a public utility for each energy efficient window and door comes to mind. Since some newer electric vehicles have power outlets that can power a home, should care owners also pay a monthly as well?
The system may not be perfect. But this new tax/fee doesn’t seem the right fix.
