Redwood boys soccer uses three-goal rally to top Tam
The Redwood High boys soccer team scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half to kickstart a rally that carried the Giants to a 3-2 victory over Tam on Monday night.
The Red-tailed Hawks (71-5) took their first league loss of the season despite getting first-half goals from Jasper Kunz and Schuyler Hoeberichts to grab a 2-0 lead.
Redwood’s rally began with a pair of penalty kicks given early in the second half, both converted by Matt Jessen. The Giants (82-2) capped the rally with a goal off a corner kick — scored by Jack Middleton, assisted by Dave Mazariegos — to secure the 3-2 win.
Both teams sit on 26 points in the MCAL standings.
• Davi Pinheiro scored all three goals as Terra Linda (8-3-1) picked up a 3-0 win against Novato (1-8-3) on Monday night. The win kept the Trojans right in the think of the playoff chase as the top five teams are neck and neck for the four MCAL postseason spots.
• Juan Bonilla also scored a hat trick as San Rafael held on for a 3-2victory over San Marin. Bonilla scored in the fourth, 26th and 64th minutes as the Bulldogs (9-2-2) built a 3-1 lead. San Marin (3-6-3) scored in the final 10minutes on a free kick by Gio Gonzalez to set up a dramatic finish. Eric Rodriguez scored the first goal for San Marin, assisted by David Barrera. San Rafael moved into sole possession of first with the win.
• James Daly scored on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to put Branson on track for its second MCAL win of the season, a 2-0 victory against Marin Catholic (1-12-0). Connor Williams added an insurance goal for the Bulls (2-11-0) on an unassisted shot from about 25 yards out.
Girls basketball
Hannah Golan scored 29 points to lead Branson to a 57-34 victory against Archie Williams on Monday.
Golan made 9 of her 24 shots, pulled down 13 rebounds and had four steals. Rosie Slayen chipped in with 14 points for the Bulls. Margaret Young paced the Peregrine Falcons with 12 points.
